Serenbe Excursion

March 30, 2011

Road Trip Happy Faces!

Recently, to celebrate the Spring Equinox, Starr Style traveled to Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, where we explored the environmentally responsible, organically healthy and spiritually and aesthetically stimulating community known as Serenbe.

The 900 acre community boasts 80% green space…

Homes and businesses are built to minimally disturb the natural landscape…

6-Acre Lake…

Working Organic Farm…

Miles of Trails…

The Inn at Serenbe…

There are several eating establishments at Serenbe.  We chose the HIL on – the  - hill for our Sunday Brunch.

The decor was a study in serenity…

In every direction, a tableaux of beautiful food and beautiful people…

A perfect Bloody Mary!  The olives were an extra special touch…

We both ordered the Farm Fresh Frittata.  A light and fluffy combination of eggs, potatoes, Shitakes and spinach, topped with sour cream and chives.  A loaf of home baked bread completed the savory deliciousness perfectly!

After the meal, we enjoyed viewing the clean and simple architecture, design and decor present throughout the HIL…

These unique 1970′s era tea cups and saucer/plates caught my eye!

A show of hands for the beauty at Serenbe!

Everywhere, white on white…

There are eight smaller communities within the overall community of Serenbe each offering varied living options.  Among them are estates, farmhouses, town homes and cottages.  The style that most appealed to us were the Live/Works.  Akin to Manhattan lofts, (but in the woods!) these homes are designed to create well-planned, compact spaces for living and working.  The ground floor of each two to four-story unit is a storefront to be used as a studio, workshop or retail space, with the living quarters located above.

Denis and I could certainly make good use of one of these.  Can’t you just see it!  An art studio and gallery…a dance studio…a tea room!  So many possibilities!

A shout out to Adrien at Rice University.  Go Owls!

Pure Whimsy!

Peace!

Spring has arrived!

Thank you, Serenbe, for a delightful afternoon!  We’ll be sure to return again when the organic farm is open for business beginning in May.

Home we go after another fantastic Starr Style Road Trip!

Spring Ahead!

Forsythia Festival Frolic!

March 16, 2011

I’ll call it Mellow Yellow!

Recently, Denis and I enjoyed a merry gambol to Forsyth, Georgia for its annual Forsythia Festival.

But, first things first.  A quick overnight stop in Columbus, Georgia for a special event – the very first gathering of the newly formed Springer Theater Alumni Group!  Many moons ago, back in the early 1980′s I was involved in 5 productions at the Springer Opera House Theater.  Other than for family, neither Denis, nor I, are the reunion-going type, but this one intrigued us and as we have become avid fans of the weekend road trip, we decided, “why not?”

We arrived in Columbus on that gorgeous Friday afternoon.  The Springer Theatre looked every bit the same as it did almost 30 years ago!

We checked into our room, the James L. Redd Suite (affectionately called the “red” room) at the historic Rothschild-Pound House Inn.

The Redd Room

With a cute art deco en suite bath.

Included with our stay at the B&B were afternoon refreshments at the quaint Vintage 222 Cafe just up the street from the Inn.

The shabby chic dining room served double duty as a gallery for the artist Garry Pound, who is also the proprietor of the Inn and Cafe.

We enjoyed a lovely glass of Cabernet and some yummy Bruschetta at Vintage 222.

That evening we enjoyed authentic Thai cuisine at the Old Siam in downtown Columbus.  After dinner we strolled down Broadway taking in the local flavor, some of which is still steeped in the old Boogie Oogie Oogie days!

Bobby Berkeley would have snapped up this jacket in a New York Minute!

Gorgeous Church Lady Hats!

And frocks to go with them!

Later, we joined alumni members for the reunion at the Springer’s Annex Theater for an evening of improv called No Shame Theater!

The next morning we explored the communal rooms of the Rothschild-Pound House Inn, all of which exhibited the beautiful artwork of Garry Pound.

A delicious breakfast was served, again at Vintage 222.  We dined on fluffy veggie omelets and southern-style grits & biscuits.  And then it was time to say “Goodbye, Columbus” and hit the road for the next leg of our weekend drive adventure.

We looped one last time through the historic district and past the Springer on our way out of town.

Blue skies and open roads made for a lovely cruising day!

I’ll take a dozen bottles, please!

Grabbed this one for my collection!

An adorable Main Street, USA, scene!

We must be getting close!

We headed to the Forsyth Courthouse Square to celebrate the town’s namesake shrub!  Predictably perfect, this festival boasted lots of food, arts & crafts and live entertainment!

promised to serve up

Southern Food with FLAIR!

And, did it ever!!!  Chef Wayne Wetendorf, an absolute artist with food, served up two of the most scrumptious and creative veggie plates that we have ever eaten.

Mine had a melange of sweet potato, corn and shitakes in a light mushroom sauce, a balsamic roasted portabello stuffed with garlic spinach, spicy grilled zucchini & asparagus, and fried green tomatoes layered with goat cheese and fig preserves.

Denis also enjoyed the zucchini & asparagus and the layered fried green tomatoes.  A black-eyed pea bean cake topped with garlic spinach and surrounded with a creamy chipotle and balsamic remoulade took center plate.

After lunch, we strolled through the festival again and came across the Rose, another charming vintage theater for my collection!

Happily, we made our way back to the car and began our journey back to Atlanta after having spent a picture-perfect, 24-hour road trip…

Enjoying great memories and making new ones,

Starr

March 15, 2011

I’ve heard it said
That people come into our lives for a reason
Bringing something we must learn
And we are led
To those who help us most to grow
If we let them
And we help them in return

Like a comet pulled from orbit
As it passes a sun
Like a stream that meets a boulder
Halfway through the wood
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?
But because I knew you
I have been changed for good …

Stegemoen

March 9, 2011

STEGEMOEN

To mark the occasion of my dad’s birthday, I am dedicating today’s musing to our family’s Norwegian roots that began in a little farmhouse situated in a tiny hamlet in the south central part of Norway on the Kvina River.  As was the custom in the 19th century, families in Norway took the name of their town as their surname.  Loosely translated from Norwegian to English, Stege = ladder, steps or stairs and Moen = the moon.  Nestled at the base of Mount Stegemoen, I have always liked to refer to my dad’s childhood homestead as the Stairway To Heaven!

Stegemoen, c. 1920′s

My dad, Ingvald, was born on March 9, 1920, to Inga and Andreas Stegemoen, the youngest of 6 children.  His brothers were Godtfred, Bjarne and Arne and his sisters were Sigrid and Solveig.  Life was very hard in Norway during this time and together with most (some say 90%) of the population of this region, Andreas and his oldest son, Godtfred left home and family to find work elsewhere, for them, as carpenters in America.  Inga, alone, raised her family in the modest little farmhouse taking in sewing to make ends meet.  Ingvald was 3 years old when Andreas left Norway and did not see his father again for many years, not until they met in the late 1930′s in California.

In the early 1930′s, when Ingvald was a young teenager, Godtfred returned to Stegemoen and together with Arne, the brothers rebuilt the house for Inga.

Beginning at the age of 14, Ingvald traveled the world by ocean working on a merchant vessel.  He was naturalized as a US citizen in 1943 while serving with the US Army 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate), a unit composed solely of Norwegian nationals.

Before Godtfred passed away in 1982, he once again, with the help of his brother, Arne, and his nephew, my cousin, Arve, rebuilt the house.

And then once again, this time my cousin, Arve, updated the house and rebuilt the barn structure as a garage in the early 2000′s.  The picturesque compound is now used as a weekend home for family gatherings.
