Traditions in Tubing

June 29, 2011

Gigi’s Inaugural Float Down The Chattahoochee – 2011!

Since 1991, and every summer for twenty years, we have gathered with assorted family and friends in Helen, Georgia for a fun day of tubing down the Chattahoochee River.

Here’s how it goes…

The night before, the big cooler comes up from the basement and the tubing sticks and river shoes come down from the attic.

Early in the morning, we prepare a yummy picnic lunch and then we pack up the car and depart Atlanta at 10 a.m.  With soy lattes on board (these were standard even before the days of Starbucks!), we enjoy a leisurely drive north to the charming and kitschy Alpine Village called Helen.

By noon, we are all gathering in the picnic area of the Cool River Tubing Co. (formerly Alpine Tubing).

The tablecloth goes down and the food begins piling up on the table.  Everyone brings a sandwich of their choice and lots of sides for sharing.

After clean-up time, we change into our bathing suits and make our way over to the river’s edge where we put our tubes in to the cold, flowing Chattahoochee – heavenly on a hot Georgia day!

Gigi in her cute tubing attire!

And then, for two hours, bliss.  There is something so right about floating down the river with your honey and, literally, going with the flow.  A little white water now and then for excitement, a few moments stuck on a rock, but for the most part floating along without a care in the world.

Sometimes it’s nice to park for a few minutes on one of the islands for a few Kodak moments…

And then back in the river for more floating fun…

After de-tubing, a quick rinse in the showers and then some family portraits…

The Happy Little Family

Next, comes the fun bus ride through Downtown Helen and back to Cool River Tubing Co.  After a quick change into dry clothing, we always head into town for some Alpine sightseeing…

Bubbles for Gigi!

After all that tubing and sightseeing, we always wrap up the day with a convivial meal at one of the restaurants perched over the river.  This year, The International Cafe at the Helendorf Inn.

While we wait for our food, Philippe and Gigi shop for real estate.

Right after our meal, a huge storm blew through Helen and we had the best seats in the house to enjoy the blustery winds without getting soaked by the driving rain.

The temperature dropped considerably and Amanda had the best idea!  Hot Chocolate in June!!

Yummy!

After the storm passed over, we headed back to Atlanta.  Gigi slept like a baby all the way home!

Encore Dahlonega

June 22, 2011

Having had so much fun in the Lumpkin County, Georgia town of Dahlonega recently, Starr Style returned to sample more of it’s town and country ambience.

Our return visit included one night at the Top of the Square B&B.

This charming establishment is housed on the 3rd floor of a historic building on Dahlonega’s Town Square.

We chose Sara’s Room.

This walking stick, carved with the name, Sara, was hidden in the wall since 1881.  It was retrieved when the building was renovated in 2005.  It is prominently displayed in a glass case in Sara’s Room.

After checking in, we walked one block off the square to the Holly Theatre.

We enjoyed a Matinee Performance of the classic Musical Comedy, Guys and Dolls.  This community theater production was lively and totally entertaining.  Bravo!!

For post-theater dining, we chose the Corkscrew Cafe (Dining with a Twist!), conveniently located right next door to the Holly.

On the patio at the Corkscrew Cafe.

A perfectly chilled Pinot Grigio for me, a Guinness for Denis.  We started with a salad of field greens, cucumbers, carrots & artichoke hearts served with the house creamy orange dressing.

Next, stuffed Portobello mushrooms combined with spinach, tomatoes, pesto, goat cheese, mozzarella, roasted garlic & red pepper mayo served on ciabatta bread.  Yum!

After our savory and delicious meal, we explored the lower level of the the Corkscrew Cafe, now used as their wine cellar, but still contains elements of its jailhouse history…

The original jailhouse sink.

We wrapped up the evening with a stroll around the square, stopping here and there, to peruse the offerings of some of the little shops.

This chandelier would be perfect in my fantasy tea room!

We popped into The Crimson Moon Cafe for a nightcap…

Tea for me…

Double Espresso for Denis…

and a Dark Chocolate Brownie to share!

We turned in early back in Sara’s Room for an entertaining evening of the 65th Annual Tony Awards…

Note to self — Get to New York to see The Book of Mormon…

In the morning, the dappled light outside the B&B made for a serene scene.

Included in the price of our room was a huge country breakfast!

We walked one block over to the Country Cafe which lived up to its name…

Huge Country Omelets made with Farm Fresh Eggs and Veggies,  Golden Hash Browns, Fluffy Buttermilk Biscuits with Gravy.

After a breakfast like that, indeed!!!

We spent the rest of the morning exploring country road after country road…

Snake!!!

There are at least one dozen award-winning wineries nestled among the hills and valleys surrounding Dahlonega.  Today, we chose Blackstock.

Beautiful rolling vineyards and mountain vistas were everywhere…

Blackstock is an internationally acclaimed winery.  It has been honored as having produced the best red wine in Georgia.

Got Wine?

This reminds me of those old timey postcards from the 1940′s and 1950′s!

And we certainly had an old timey great time during our encore visit to Dahlonega!

Girl(friends)s Just Want To Have Fun!

June 15, 2011

Recently, Starr Style, Daeyl the Divine, Radiant Roopa and Ellen Darling spent a perfect Girl’s Day.

After arriving at Daeyl’s lovely house in Dacula, we gathered in the comfy living room to catch up on all of the news and sip some refreshing Skinny Girl Margaritas!

Daisy the Dog was front and center!

Then, just a hop, skip and a jump (not) over to Discover Mills to catch an early evening showing of “Bridesmaids,” which features all of those hysterical SNL gals!

The theater was nice and cool and we made ourselves comfortable in the third row with our absurdly expensive #5′s – small popcorn and a drink!  Nearly two hours of non-stop laughing – priceless!

Next, it was off to the outlet stores.  You could tell who the experienced shoppers in this group were.  Roopa and Daeyl worked those racks with flair and panache.

Where’s Waldo, I mean Roopa?!

Ellen and I were happy with our seats in the Peanut Gallery!

Oh, well then, I’ll take one in every color!

Just call her “Roopadora Duncan.”

So, Ellen and I left the “I Love To Shop Girls” and set out on our own mall adventure…

We found the perfect floor for tap dancing!

We played Peek-A-Boo!

I have no words.

We really worked up an appetite after all that shopping and not shopping.  Greek anyone?!

Yummy Veggie Wraps and Greek Potatoes!

The classic table shot!

Who knew the mall could be so much fun?!

I love my girlfriends,

Starr

Town and Country

June 8, 2011

Recently, Starr Style spent a pleasant afternoon in historic Dahlonega, Georgia.

“We’re goin’ on a road trip, a road trip, a road trip!”

Just a one hour, hop, skip and a jump north of Atlanta, Dahlonega is a charming example of small town America.

.

Historic Dahlonega Square is a popular tourist destination, with gift shops, restaurants, art galleries and artists’ studios.   We spent a few agreeable hours there soaking up the Southern Appalachian atmosphere.

For my collection!!

Beautiful flowers were blooming everywhere…

The trademark of a southern springtime — gorgeous French blue hydrangea!

And a trademark of our little road trips – a lovely, late afternoon lunch…

One block off of the town square we settled in at a quaint Irish pub called Shenanigans.

A veggie burger for Denis.  Veggie stew for me!

Shenanigans!  My newest favorite word!

Just up the street we spotted this house.  Now wouldn’t that make a cute tea shop?  I can just see the hanging baskets over flowing with flowers!

And speaking of tea shops, we found the closest thing to one that we could…

The Picnic Cafe

The coffee smelled so good as we walked inside, so we both had a cup of the house roast.  And coupled it with a shared portion of a dark chocolate layered cake with homemade ice cream!

Who likes road trips?

Starr Style does!

Get your road trip on,

Starr

Keep Austin Weird

June 1, 2011

Recently, Starr Style traveled to Austin, Texas, where Adrien has a summer internship with Indeed.com.  We spent 3 fun days exploring the city.

The adventure began with Denis and Adrien road tripping it to Austin via Biloxi and Houston.

All packed up and ready to go!

They encountered the swollen Mississippi River.

The car was jam packed with all of Adrien’s gear, so I took the easy way and flew to Austin, meeting up with the boys at our downtown hotel within minutes of their arrival.  Coordination Perfection!!

Doing the “Continental”

If you ever get to Texas, be sure to try out Amy’s Ice Cream!  I enjoyed a teeny weeny cup of the  Gingerbread flavor while I waited for the hotel shuttle.  Yummy!

The world was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. that evening, so we decided to stroll the famous 6th Street and then enjoy what would perhaps be our last supper.

There were many restaurants to choose from.  We found ourselves on the rooftop terrace at the Iron Cactus.

We all chose the Spinach, Artichoke & Grilled Portobello Mushroom Enchiladas.  The corn tortillas were filled with white cheese, spinach, artichoke and mushrooms, topped with verde sauce and served with black beans and cilantro lime rice.  Delicious!

6 p.m. came and went…

Jazz Hands to the end of the world!!

Back down at street level, some examples of Austin’s Judgement Day humor:

As we were returning to our hotel for the evening, we stopped in to explore this great store!

Cowgirling It Up!

I’ll add this one to my collection!

We purchased this cute guitar ornament for our travel Christmas tree!

The next morning we toured The Driskill, Austin’s oldest and most famous hotel.

Driskill Hotel

“Built in 1885-86, by the Cattle King, Colonel Jesse L. Driskill (1824-1890) who moved to Austin in 1869.  Brick dressed with Limestone, had three Grand Entrances — one was the largest arched doorway in Texas.  ”Ladies Entrance” was on the northeast, bust of Colonel Driskill is over south arch, busts of his rancher sons on east and west.  Rich furnishings were selected by Driskill, who leased out his hotel — southwest’s finest when it opened Christmas 1886.

Recorded Texas Historic Landmark -1966

Just call him “Tex”

Lots of Stars and Cowboy Art on view…

Now we were ready for brunch, today at the 1886 Cafe & Bakery on the verandah at The Driskill.

The Hippy Hollow Breakfast Special!  Scrambled Eggs, Spinach, Goat Cheese & Tomatoes.
Served with a side of Country Potatoes.  Tasty tasty!!

Next up, a stroll down 6th to Congress and down to the river and back…

The Bat Bridge!

This lovely spot was right outside our hotel.

That afternoon we moved Adrien into his cute apartment close to the campus of UT.  Then we explored the neighborhood and found a funky cafe, The Spider House,  where we spent the evening enjoying dining alfresco and the beautiful Austin weather.

Denis had a Wheat Agave Beer, a Creamosa (Cream Soda) for me!

We had breakfast with Adrien the next morning at the Kerby Lane Cafe, another cute little cafe near his apartment.

Lemon Poppyseed Pancakes!  Bring ‘em on!

Pancake Perfection!

Then it was time for Adrien to begin his first day on the job!

A “first day of school” photo all grown up!

Denis and I spent the day exploring more of Austin.  I gathered a few additions for my Vintage Theatre Marquee Collection!

And then it was back to The Spider House for a late lunch and a lazy afternoon in the Austin heat…

Today I tried a Cucumber Margarita!  So refreshing!

That evening, Adrien filled us in about his first day on the job.  It was a great day for him and the beginning of a great adventure for his summer 2011.  Good luck, Son!!  We’re so proud of you!  And don’t forget…
