Kaffeeklatsch

February 16, 2011

Recently, I have started a list of words that I like.  Some of them because they are fun to say, like insouciance. Some of them because of what they depict, like shenanigans!  Some of them because they are fun to write, like ersatz. And most of all I like some of them, obviously, for what they mean and how they make me feel, like kaffeeklatsch.

Just as satisfying as getting together for a formal afternoon tea with happy palaver is the impromptu visit with a friend over a steaming cup of java, a slice of cake and (in the best sense of the word) a little gossip!

Growing up in the 50′s, the moms in my neighborhood would often drop in on one another (wearing their “friendly,” 50′s-style shirt dresses and pumps).  At our house, mostly they were served tea and crumpets.  But on occasion, only coffee would do if mum was serving up a slice of our family’s (on my dad’s side) traditional “Norwegian-Style Sour Cream Coffee Cake.” These congenial gatherings were, indeed, kaffeeklatsches!

Nowadays, we still enjoy this social activity, albeit mostly practiced at the corner Starbucks!  Still, every now and then, it’s great to sit around the kitchen table with a friend and “catch up.”

I was going through mum’s recipe files looking for her scones recipe when I came across the yellowed from age page torn from the Roald Reporter, the newsletter of the Sons’ of Norway chapter that dad belonged to in Brooklyn, NY, and there was the recipe for Sour Cream Coffee Cake that my cousin, Gail, had submitted.

I hosted a luncheon for my Christian Women’s Fellowship group, the Rebekahs, this week, and I am proud to say that I baked this cake for the first time in my life and served it for dessert with coffee.  Not exactly an intimate gathering, we were 12 around the table.  But I assure you, there was a lot of “klatsching” going on (in the best sense of the word)!

Norwegian-Style Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Topping:

8 oz.                  ground walnuts (I love nuts, so I doubled this!)

3 tbsp.               cinnamon

1 cup                 sugar (next time I will reduce this to 1/2 cup as it was extremely sweet!)

Mix all together and set aside.

Cake:

1/2 lb.               soft butter

4                         eggs (I use Eggbeaters)

2 cups               sugar

2 tsp.                 vanilla

2 cups                sour cream

2 cups                flour

2 tsp.                  baking powder

2 tsp.                 baking soda

1/2 tsp.             salt

Cream sugar and butter until fluffy.  Beat in eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.  Stir in vanilla.  Sift dry ingredients together and add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream.

Turn 1/2 the batter into greased and waxed paper lined (I had never heard of this, so I didn’t use the wax paper and it turned out fine.  But upon querying some bakers in my ladies group, I was told that, yes, they always do this!) 10 x 14 x 3 pan and sprinkle with half the topping.  Pour remaining batter and sprinkle with topping.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until cake tests done.

Go ahead.  Bake a coffee cake.  Your kitchen will smell so good!  Then grab a friend and klatsch away!

Three Little Crowns

February 2, 2011

Ellen Crown (Auntie Nell) – February 11, 1916

Joan Crown (Mum) – February 18, 1923

Edward Crown (Uncle Ted) – February 25, 1921

Each February brings back memories of my mum and her siblings.  It still tickles me that their birthdays were exactly one week apart.  Auntie Nell on the 11th, Mum on the 18th and Uncle Ted on the 25th!

Celebrating their birthdays together in Los Angeles.

c. Late 1980′s

This was the last time they were all together here on earth.

Happy February!

By George!

January 26, 2011

Recently, I went to see The King’s Speech.  It was a lovely film through and through.

I grew up hearing stories about King George V and his two sons, the scandalous Prince Edward and the sweet, stuttering Prince Albert (King George VI) from my Mum.  Born in London in 1923, she was a subject under the rules of both George V and George VI.  She only had the very best things to say about her two Kings.

The Coronation of King George V was in the spring of 1911.  At that time, the Crown family purchased a number of gold coins each equaling one pound sterling that were minted to commemorate the royal occasion.

Known as British Sovereigns, these coins have been the cornerstone of the Tudor Dynasty.

Time passed and as each child in the Crown family reached their 21st birthday, they were presented with one of the gold sovereigns, the girls received theirs mounted as a pendant to be worn on a gold chain as a necklace.

Mum received hers in 1944 with World War II raging all around her.

It was one of her most prized possessions.

She wore it on her wedding day.

And I wore it on mine.

It served as something old and something borrowed.

She wore it during her last visit back home to her beloved England in 2000.

The sovereign is mine now.

When I arrived home after the movie, I took out the sovereign and just looked at it.  100 years of history in my hand.  And so much love for my mum in my heart.

Snow Day!

January 12, 2011

Ahhh, yes.  The snow.

We started paying attention to the weather predictions on Saturday morning and acted accordingly.  Adrien changed his flight so that he would get back to Houston a day earlier and avoid having to live at Hartsfield International for a couple of days.  We filled the cars with gas and brought the live tree to Home Depot for recycling.  We did a major shop at Publix (where everyone else had the same idea at the same time).

And then we waited for the snow.

And exactly at the same time that the radar pictured it on the television screen, so did it begin falling white and beautiful.  Quickly it came and accumulated.  3, or 4 or maybe 5 inches.  And then sometime during the next movie of our movie marathon, it, in a chameleon-like way, changed to icy rain.  Atlanta’s answer to the snow storm — the treacherous wintry mix!

I love our 21st century snow days!  It’s great to be able to prepare for convenience and safety.

As I gazed out of my front window today, I saw the young family from across the street having fun in the snow using cardboard boxes for sleds.  I immediately thought I should go to the attic and get out the bright red saucer sleds that have been tucked away up there for a few years and offer them for the day.  Instead, I just called out a greeting and snapped a photo.   They were having lots of fun without my help!  Snow days make for great memories.

Snow Day – 2011

Growing up mid-century on Long Island and living through some huge blizzards, I remember being completely surprised when snow began falling.  It’s snowing!  It’s snowing!  We never knew how many inches (and more often than not, feet) of snow we would have.

Snow Day – c. 1957

Three pairs of wool socks, mittens and hats for each child creating puddles in the mud room, was the sign of a really awesome snow day.  No running to the A&P to stock up.  Moms just normally kept hot cocoa, alphabet soup and the ingredients for macaroni & cheese on hand in the wintertime.  Dads rarely stayed home when it snowed, and seemed almost excited about getting out on the roads (tire chains in place) and hitting the Long Island Expressway.  And when ours returned home early evening, he would lift the middle and small-sized snowballs on to the large one and then help us find natural items from the yard to create the arms and face of our man.  Mom always had a carrot on hand for the nose.

We stayed out in the yard until it was just too dark or just too freezing to stand another moment.  And even then we would huddle by the window looking out at dad shoveling the driveway, paths and sidewalks in the twilight.

With Dad – c. 1950′s

If there was snow, Dad had on his skis!

Sleep came fast and hard after a play day in the snow.  And not until we awoke the next morning, would we know if Jack Frost had paid us another visit.

Maybe I won’t watch the news tonight.  Maybe I’ll just wait to see what Mother Nature brings…

Fabulous Felines

November 3, 2010

Recently, here at Starr Style,  I replaced my badly damaged desk lamp (an entire shelf of books and magazines crashed down onto it) with this whimsical little number from a few years back that was waiting patiently in the attic for an encore.  These three little cutie-cats greet me each morning.

Then 3 more events happened in rapid succession that kept cats on my mind.

Gigi was a precious pink kitty for her first Halloween!

Next, my dear friend, Lance, sent me an email about “More Invisible Cat Accessories.”  At first I thought he didn’t send me the attachment.  Then, I got it!  I’m still LOLing about that one!

And then when I peeked at Facebook this morning, Adrien had posted this photo…

The first LOLcat!

So that clinched it for me.  Today, my 3 cats will appear in cyberspace in my musing!

Actually, there were 4.  The first was named Timmie and he just happened to be there when I was a small child.  I don’t know when he arrived, maybe before I was born.  He was black with white paws and other white markings that made him look like he was wearing a tux!  I do remember thinking that he would look dashing with a top hat and cane.

When we made our first move from my childhood home on Long Island into the city (Queens, actually), Timmie did not take to high-rise living.  Mom and Dad bought our coop apartment on the first floor of the 16-story building because the thought of Timmie falling off the balcony was too much to bear.  Well, within a week, Timmie left us to live in the backyard of a very large house on the same block with dozens of other cats.  We tried to coax him home, but he would not have it.  We had to be content spying him every once in a while as we walked past the house.  And we were stuck living on the first floor when we could have been living in the sky!

And what was it with those cats anyway?  It was the age of Top Cat.  They were supposed to dig city life!

We eventually gave up on Timmie ever coming home.

So, for my 9th birthday, we went to the animal shelter to pick out a kitten.  I remember traveling for a long time on the subway to get there.  It had to have been in a completely different borough like Brooklyn, the Bronx or maybe it was Staten Island.  We had a car, but for some reason we didn’t drive there.

I can remember the first time I saw the little white, fuzzy kitten in the cage with many others.  She was washing the paws of a calico.  I knew right away that she was mine.  She was my Snowball!

And so we headed back home on the subway, but this time with a treasured little kitten in a cardboard box.  That was the first of many travels for Snowball.  She lived fabulously for 19 years, reigned over 10 different homes, traveled up and down the east coast countless times from the Catskill Mountains to the lower ranges of the Chattahoochee River, endured the arrival of Sammy the Samala (more about him in another post) and graciously shared her familial laps, her coveted radiator perches and her cat food bowls with two other strays that adopted us.  And in all that time, she never once tried to leave us.

Snowball

Snowball particularly liked Christmas.  Santa would always bring her a felt mouse stuffed with catnip.  She would entertain us for hours in her catnip haze (hey, it was the 60′s)!

Catnip Aftermath

So, Snowball happily ruled the roost for several years until the arrival of the aforementioned Sammy.  And then to add insult to injury, my brother, Val, came in the house one evening and told mom that there was a sad orange cat with a broken leg hanging around outside.

Ginger’s Arrival

We took the little cat in, nursed her back to health and named her Ginger.  We tried to get help for her leg, but we were told by the vet that it was an old injury and she would live quite well with her limp.

Snowball and Ginger

“Getting to know you.”

After a while, we gave Ginger a second and more “theatrical” name.  It was Bartholo-Mew.  Well you see, our little orange cat began walking around quite normally, and it was only when she was craving some more attention that her little limp would get worse!

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!  In time, Snowball and Ginger became pretty compatible.

What’s funnier than one cat with catnip?  Two cats with catnip!

A few more years passed by and one night another stray literally crashed into our lives.  We were sitting around the kitchen table and we kept hearing a loud noise outside the back door.  Upon investigation, we found a very large white and black cat hanging on to our screen door for dear life. He would fall off and then leap back up and hang on for as long as he could.  This went on for most of the evening.  He was obviously hungry and he was not leaving so, famous last words, we said we would give him some food and then he would probably go on his way.

Well, he never did go on his way, at least for many years.  So when it was clear that our Kat Kingdom was now officially 3, we had to give our new pet a name.  He was obviously male, but the name we chose was Miriam.

Although Snowball was still and would always be the Queen, she really had her whiskers put out of joint when Miriam came to stay.  She spent much of her time hiding up in the wheel well of whichever car was parked in the driveway, probably to have some peace and quiet.  And the rest of her time was spent washing the motor oil off of her coat.  There was a time when we thought we had a gray cat instead of a white one!  But she still always had the first pick of a lap!

Snowball & Mom

Snowball & Dad

After Val and I both grew up and left home, the cats remained with Mom and Dad.  And so it was that during one of my visits home when Snowball was 19 and had been in failing health for a while, I held and petted her for the last time.  She passed peacefully later that night.

Sammy the Samala was gone by this time too, so Ginger and Miriam carried on keeping company for the next years.

Mom and dad were by this time official Snowbirds, spending Easter through Halloween in the Catskills and the winter months in Georgia.  As they were packing up and about to head north one year, Ginger could not be found.  They looked everywhere and waited a few days hoping she would show up, but she didn’t.  After they left, I checked over at their home often, but still no Ginger.  We prayed that she had found another loving family to take her in as we had many years ago.

Two years passed by and during the time my parents were back in Georgia for the winter that year, an orange cat with a limp showed up on their patio!  Could it be?  Although there is no way to be totally sure, the orange cat stayed and she and Miriam became quite close in their old age.  We affectionately named her Bartholo-Mew II!

Miriam & Ginger

A few more years passed and both cats, first Ginger and then Miriam, just as they had each arrived one day years earlier, left and never returned.  And each time, again, we prayed that a loving family took them in and cared for them.

And finally, for the first time in over 40 years, Joan and Ingvald were empty nesters!!

Destination Vow Renewal

October 27, 2010

Recently, Starr Style traveled to the beautiful town of Asheville in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge mountains to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa.

Our first glimpse at the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains.

After a very pleasant drive on a gorgeous fall day we arrived in Asheville and checked into Room 2025 (such an appropriate number) at The Grove Park Inn.  We were immediately mesmerized by the breathtaking view from our room.  We knew right then and there that this would be a very restful and renewing getaway.

Our view!

We were anxious to see more of this beautiful resort and to get familiar with everything it had to offer us during our stay.  It had been 25 years since we last visited this inn and the building and grounds had undergone major changes during that time.  Here are some of the sites we enjoyed during our initial walk around (my first sans crutches)!

The Main Inn

The Spa

The Sunset Terrace

The Falls

The Terraced Gardens

The Harvest Decor in every Nook & Cranny

The Sammons Verandah

Everywhere, a gorgeous view!

The Main Hall

After a long mountain walk one evening, at the sunset hour, scarcely more than a year ago, I sat down here to rest, and while almost entranced by the panorama of these encircling mountains and a restful outlook upon green fields, the dream of an old-time inn came to me – an inn whose exterior, and interior as well, should present a home-like and wholesome simplicity, whose hospitable doors should ever be open wide inviting the traveler to rest awhile, shut in from the busy world outside.

Our First Sunset

Every morning, Denis prepared our lattes and we enjoyed the view while planning our activities for the day.

Have Espresso Maker, Will Travel

And, of course, we cast our votes for Adrien’s video.

Then we enjoyed the lavish and scrumptious breakfast buffet each morning in the Blue Ridge Dining Room.

Our favorites from the buffet had to be the made-to-order veggie omelettes, the juicy fresh fruits and the outstanding potato casserole.  A hearty meal, indeed!

The view at breakfast was the best part of the meal!

We had many delicious dinners as well, but of special note was our anniversary dinner on the Sunset Terrace.

Our waiter, Claudio, was wonderful, but not very good with a camera!

We started with our favorite Martini (Dry, Vodka, Extra Olives).  Stuffed Portobello and Fried Green Tomatoes for starters, next was the best ever Butternut Squash Soup.  Our entree was a dense and richly seasoned veggie version of Pasta Puttanesca paired with the Grove Park Inn Cabernet Sauvignon.  It was so delicious, but we were so full that just a few bites were enough.  We boxed up our desserts, Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Truffle Torte to be enjoyed at another time!  A nice, long after dinner walk was in order!!

Wherever we go, we like to take a city tour to get familiar with the lay of the land.  I particularly enjoy these tours on a trolley bus on a gorgeous day, as was the case in beautiful Asheville.

There was so much to see and learn about this historic city.  Here are a few examples of the inspired architecture that is so prevalent in the downtown area:

There is a residential neighborhood in Asheville called Montford Park.  If you considered moving to this part of North Carolina, this is probably where you would want to live!  The homes are gracious, most of them sitting on gently sloping hillsides.  The area parks are lush and inviting.  It was here that we spotted a lovely little grotto.

We returned to that spot on our anniversary to share the same vows that we did 25 years ago.

Renewing our Vows in Montford Park

I take you, Denis/Starr, to be my husband/wife and these things I promise you:  I will be faithful to you and honest with you; I will obey, respect, trust, help and care for you; I will share my life with you; I will forgive you as we have been forgiven; and I will try with you better to understand ourselves, the world, and God, through the best and worst of what is to come until death parts us.

And then, it was back to the Grove Park’s Sammons Verandah to witness yet another flamboyant sunset while we toasted our long and happy marriage with the same champagne glasses we toasted from 25 years ago.  And, as is our yearly anniversary tradition, we reviewed our 5-year plan and gave thanks for the many blessings we enjoyed this past year (and in this case the past 25 years) and kudos to ourselves for making plans for our lives and then living our plans.

Along with the GPI’s wonderful hotel, spa, dining rooms, nightclub, open spaces, gardens and golf course, the resort also boasts some world class shopping.  There are beautiful boutiques for clothing and jewelry, a shop just for items emblazoned with the GPI signature logo and a gourmet cooking store with cafe.  At Treasures in the Park you can find delightful home decor items and the cutest toys and accessories for babies and children.  At Christmas in the Park, I chose the perfect ornament to hang on our Travel Tree this Christmas!

Perfect for our Travel Tree!

And to satisfy our tea time tradition, we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with all the accoutrements at Chelsea’s Cafe & Tea Room in the Biltmore Village.

The tea room was perfectly pink and chintzy, but the day that God had made was so delightful that we chose to sit outside on the cobblestone patio.

Raspberry Black Tea for Denis.  Tippy Assam for me!

We both chose the Vegetarian Tea Plate.

The Savories included a Stacked Caprese with Basil Pesto, Asparagus Quiche, Tomato Topped with Broccoli Slaw, Parmesan Wafer Topped with Truffle Cream and Brown Bread Topped with Pickled Zucchini & Carrots.

The Sweets included Rice Pudding, Layered Lemon Cake, Layered Coconut Cake, 3 Varieties of Cookies (Gingerbread, Chocolate & Butter) and Pumpkin Shaped Sugar Cookies.

For the Bread Course, Crumbly Cinnamon Scones with Cream and Raspberry Jam.

There were 3 shops inside Chelsea’s, one for tea time items, one for home decor and upstairs the most adorable boutique for children.

Loved this Party Hat Chandelier!

Tea Time Serving Pieces Galore!

Annexed to the Grove Park Inn is an artists’ community called Grovewood which claims to provide its visitors with a magical experience of art, craft, history and old world charm.  And, indeed it did, during one afternoon that we spent there.

The Gallery represents over 500 artists from the United States, mostly from the southeast.

There are two museums, the Homespun, which showcases memorabilia including letters, artifacts and woven samples for its historical overview of Biltmore Industries, and the Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum.  You can take a studio tour where you can see artists creating jewelry, furniture, pottery and glass art.

We ate a tasty meal at the Grovewood Cafe.  We shared a real home-style, southern vegetable plate consisting of the creamiest mac & cheese ever, surrounded by roasted parsnips, beets & asparagus and garlic spinach.  It was yummy!

Our favorite part of the Grovewood consortium was the Sculpture Garden.

During a late afternoon drive around town, Asheville was ablaze with fall colors…
