Midweek Musing: There are places I remember…

All my life…

66 North Street

This week marks a major occasion for my forever friend, Gloria.  She is selling her childhood home, the only home she has ever known, and moving on to a new life adventure!

North Street has been in her family for over half a century!  It began with her Nonna and Grandpa’s move from Brooklyn to Long Island bringing along their beloved daughter, Maria, and her family.  And it comes to a close with their middle grand daughter, Gloria, a steadfast steward of this family abode, bravely moving on to new beginnings.

When I think of a home and all that it encompasses, North Street fills the bill.

It was a home that oozed love, pride, passion and honesty.

It was a safe haven.

It was a home of simplicity and routine.

It was clean and comfortable.

It was, indeed, a home with a huge heart of a kitchen!  Cooking and enjoying delicious meals were foundational.

It was a home where special occasions and holidays were celebrated with huge gatherings of family and family and more family!!

And mostly, to me, it was a home that accepted you just for who you were.  And invited you in to kick off your shoes, sit for a spell and feel the love of generations.

Janet, Starr & Gloria

My last visit to North Street – 2009

Best wishes as you enter this exciting time of your life my dear Gloria!

Home is where the heart is,

Starr

Midweek Musing: Veggie Milestone

May 2, 2012

Here at Starr-Style we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary as Vegetarians!  In May of 1987, Denis and I gave up our flesh eating habit and have lived happily since then knowing that we, in some small way, contribute to a more humane world and sustainable planet.

That first year as veggie newbies was challenging and exciting!  We embraced the life style on every level.  It was a sweet and spiritual time for us and that mutual commitment to such a major change has been a foundational element in our long and happy marriage.  It was like “building our house on a rock,” from Scripture.

Veggie Newbies enjoying the natural beauty of N. Georgia (Summer ’87)

We made it to the Rainbow People gathering that year with our Mung Bean Sprouts in tow.

Our first years were full of experimental cooking and eating.  We made weekly trips to Sevanandah, Rainbow Grocery and Unity Foods for wholesome pantry and produce items.  Publix had not opened in Georgia yet, and Kroger was just catching on so their natural foods’ department was rather lacking then.  Nowadays, you can find most anything in those two grocery stores, and, of course, the wonderful Whole Foods and Fresh Markets have changed the way we shop.  I’m happy to say that both Sevanandah and Rainbow Grocery are still thriving.

In addition to the transformation in our kitchen, so then did our bookshelves.  I filled mine with wonderful selections like Laurel’s Kitchen, Moosewood Cookbook, Diet For a Small Planet, How To Raise Your Child As A Vegetarian and, of course, I looked forward to receiving my new Vegetarian Times each month.

Denis got down to the nitty gritty, delving into the whole living handbooks popular at the time; Survival Into The 21st Century by Viktoras Kulvinskas, Naturama by Dr. Ann Wigmore and Healing Ourselves by Naboru Muramoto.

We joined GreenPeace, Better World Society, World Wildlife Fund, the International Vegetarian Society and others.

We gave up leather.  We signed up for yoga classes. We burned incense.  We even bought a juicer, a top of the line Phoenix.

And we made it a family affair!

Pasta Pellerin!

When Monique and Philippe came for their extended stays over the years, they joined us on the veggie ride!  Here they are showing off a gourmet masterpiece, a tofu lasagna that they built!  Philippe would call it Toe Food Lasagna!  We named the dish, appropriately, Pasta  Pellerin.  A story we often laugh about from those early veggie years is the time we were  on a camping trip in south Georgia, we were in a country grocery store, and Philippe ran up and down the meat aisle exclaiming, “Dead Animals, Dead Animals!”  We purchased our onions and left quickly.

Alfalfa Sprouts!

After a few years we settled in to the veggie groove and were, for the most part, vegan.  We were hoping to have a baby and we were in agreement that should we be blessed in that way, we would add a few more calcium rich foods in to our diet and embrace the lacto-vegetarian food plan.  It was around this time that Denis invented his superb Mushroom Strudel.

Adrien

11/28/90

There was some concern from family and friends about my veggie pregnancy, but our little sprout arrived healthy and beautiful and 8 lbs 5 oz of pure love!  Raised totally vegetarian, Adrien, at 21, still practices the life style.

First solid food – veggie, of course!

I’m not sure what this beautiful creature is, but we sure wouldn’t eat it!

In fact, to help Adrien explain his different looking lunch box items at school, he simply told his friends that he didn’t eat anything with a face.

.

There was a time when Denis thought he would like to be a Fruitarian.  And then again, there was the time that he said he could live just by breathing – a Breatharian!

So the years just flew by and here we are 25 years later and still on the veggie trail.  Our travels  abroad and in these beautiful United States have afforded us samplings of veggie cuisine from the exotic to the simply comforting.  We have gone back and forth between vegan, lacto, lacto-ovo, but mostly just plain vegetarian.

I’ve yet to find a pair of worthy vegan tap shoes, so I enjoy my Capezio K360′s and wear them out before I buy another pair.  We still occasionally sign up for yoga, but it’s just as likely that you will find us in Salsa Class.  Yankee Candles have taken the place of the incense and after 3 moves and always ending up stashed away in the dark corner of the deepest cabinet for the last 20 years, our Phoenix Juicer once again stands proudly on our countertop and we are green juicing again!

Nowadays, these are some of my favorites on the cookbook shelf.  The tried and true Vegetarian Times magazine is always a go to resource for new ideas and yummy recipes.  And just recently I added Victoria Moran’s newest, Main Street Vegan.

As a tea time enthusiast, I have created menus that I daintily call Vege-Tea-rian!

Most days my countertop looks like this as I prepare to cook something vegelicious for dinner!

And now every morning we toast to the good veggie life and sip our God & Goddess Green Juice!

And a Toast to another 25 Years of Healthy, Cruelty-Free and Deliciously Veggie Dining!

Peace, Love and Veggies,

Starr

Midweek Musing: It Wouldn’t Be Spring…

April 25, 2012

Without the Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park!

It was a gorgeous day for a walk.  We took the scenic route through the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.

I would have loved to have snipped a few stalks of this Goddess Kale for my Green Juice!

The park was a lush oasis after the plentiful rain we’ve had recently.

Everyone was enjoying the beautiful weather, art and music!

A nice souvenir from the International Plaza!

This booth was called Vincent Van Gourd!

Classic Rock Collages!

Even the Port-O-Potty was feeling artsy!

Food Glorious Festival Food!

“I’m ready!”

Through the Gardens again and home for a nap!

Funny, we didn’t see one Dogwood Tree in bloom,

Midweek Musing: Heart of Georgia

April 4, 2012

Recently, Starr Style hit the road for a weekend trip to Historic Macon, Georgia for its 30th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival, a joyful celebration of art, music and culture featuring a “pretty in pink” backdrop painted by 350,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees!

Upon our arrival in the largest city in central Georgia, located at the geographic center of the state, we checked into the 1842 Inn, a B&B in a beautiful antebellum mansion.

The 1842 decked out for the Cherry Blossom Festival!

Our home away from home was in the John Gresham Room on the upper floor of the main house.  John Gresham built the house at 353 College Street in 1842. A founder of the Macon Manufacturing Company, forerunner of the present day Bibb Company, Gresham was also active in southern politics, serving as mayor of Macon, a state Senator, and Justice of the State’s Supreme Court.

A quick change and we were out and about to explore this charming southern town…

Gorgeous Blooms Everywhere!

“And we’ll wear hats!”

I picked up a few additions for my vintage theater marquee collection…

Dinnertime found us, appropriately, on Cherry Street!

The ROOKERY was a fun pub!

Cherries!

Yummy Veggie Sandwiches!

Next up was the Coleman Hill Concert…

Cool Jazz and Hot R&B – The Joint Was Jumpin’ to the music performed by Quiet Storm

When we returned to the 1842 on that balmy evening, we were treated to freshly brewed coffee and homemade chocolate chip cookies served on a silver platter on the front porch.  Southern Hospitality at its best!

The porch next door…

“Family and friends are like the pillars on your porch.  Sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you, and sometimes it’s just enough to know they are standing by.”

The John Gresham Room provided us with an excellent night’s sleep and we were ready for more Festival Fun in the morning.

We really love the B, but it’s the & B that makes visits to Inns so special…

The Dining Room was beautifully decorated.  This Sterling Silver Russian Samovar caught my eye!

Celebrity Guest Wall at the 1842

After a second cup of coffee and a little reading out on the front porch and then a peruse of the Celebrity Guest Wall, we packed it up and hit the road.  Destination – Warner Robbins, Georgia where we had reservations for afternoon tea.

We had a quick stroll by the Ocmulgee River before we left Macon.

On the way out of town, we spotted this darling house.  Perfect for my fantasy Tea Room!

Signs do work!  We couldn’t resist this one!

The most amazing flea market!

 And then, Tea Time!!
