Princess Day!

March 31, 2010

My dear girlfriend, Roopa, and I, have a tradition.  With our birthdays two weeks apart, midway between them we celebrate with a special outing. This year, we went Royal!

Anglophiles that we are, what better way to spend a gorgeous afternoon in Atlanta than to have afternoon tea at the Four Seasons followed by the world-class exhibition, Diana – A Celebration!

To begin, we donned our “tiaras” and sipped a lovely flute of champagne.

Our trusty driver, my darling Denis, transported us to the Four Seasons in Midtown where we had reservations for Afternoon Tea at Park 75.

After sampling the bouquet of each of the teas presented in the tea chest, we made our choices.  A Marsala Black Chai for Roopa and Vanilla Oolong for me.

The Savories, Scones & Sweets were served in the traditional way on a 3-Tier Server.

Roopa’s Tea Sandwiches included Cucumber, Truffled Egg Salad,Salmon Mousse & Coronet Chicken Salad

For me, the vegetarian selection included Cucumber, Truffled Egg Salad & Caprese Stacks.

Our Bread Course was delicious!  The lightest and crumbliest Blueberry Scones served with Cream, Lemon Curd & Raspberry Jam.

And there were Sweets Galore!  Cranberry Cookies, Pecan Brownie Tartletts, Truffles, Charlotte Russe and….Huge Strawberries Dipped in Chocolate and Painted with Gold!!

We talked about everything under the sun and enjoyed chatting with a mother and daughter at the next table who were just as enamored by afternoon tea as we are!

We had a few of the sweets boxed up and then we descended the grand staircase and walked out into the beautiful Atlanta sunlight where our faithful driver was waiting to transport us to our next stop, the Atlanta Civic Center.   Along the way, he ate every last one of the sweets!!  Pity we didn’t bring him a cuppa to go!

DIANA

a celebration

This exquisite exhibit was presented in 9 separate rooms, each dedicated to one aspect of Princess Diana’s life.

We started in the Tiara Gallery - stunning.

Next we learned about some of Diana’s ancestors, the Spencer Women.

Moving through, we enjoyed mementos from her Childhood including her tap shoes!

Her Engagement at the age of 19 to Prince Charles was discussed in an endearing way in the next room.

Then came the Royal Wedding.  Diana’s gorgeous wedding gown was on display and could be studied down to the tiniest seed pearls and crystals that were hand sewn on her extremely long train.  A video ran continuously showing scenes from the fairy tale-like event.

This room was especially nostalgic for me.  Whenever there was a Royal Celebration, my mother (a true Daughter of the British Empire), would return home to England to join the masses on the Mall leading up to Buckingham Palace to cheer on her beloved Royal Family.   Here are a few of the mementos from her trip home for the wedding in 1981…

Deck of Playing Cards!

Next we entered the portion of the exhibit that detailed Diana’s prolific Work with charities.

The Tribute room included poignant moments from Diana’s funeral including her brother, Charles’ eulogy to her, Elton John’s composition of the Diana version of Candle In The Wind and videos of the unforgettable funeral procession where the flower arrangements on her coffin were graced with a simple card from her sons addressed to “Mummy.”

The Style & Fashion Gallery included 28 of her beautiful outfits.

The final display was an entire wall of shelves that housed hundreds upon hundreds of books filled with handwritten Condolences to her family upon her death from all over the world.

Our last stop was the Gift Shop where a wide array of beautiful, commemorative items were available.

This pink and platinum tea cup was the perfect memento for me to remember our Princess Day!

A splendid time with my splendid friend!

We’ll All Have Tea!

Recently, I was invited to enjoy a delightful afternoon at my friends’ beautiful home to celebrate their newly six year old daughter’s birthday celebration!

Upon my arrival, I stepped into a little (and big) girl’s dream come true of Purely Pink Potpourri Perfection!

With a dozen Little Misses together with their Mommies and Gammies, the party was an inter-generational whirlwind of activity.

The attire was Tea Party Chic!

The Birthday Girl!

While the children and their big girl helper played party games in the garden like building towers of sugar cubes and tossing sugar cubes into tea cups, my friend asked me to share a few tidbits of information with the grownups about the pleasantries of tea time.

Then the girls made their entrances and politely took their seats at the tea party table.  I shared a few tea time tips with them as well and a quick review of table manners (which they were already very well acquainted with – good job moms!)

On the Menu

“Tea” for the Children

Apple Juice infused with Purple Grapes

Hot Chocolate with Mini Marshmallows

The Sandwich Course was Savory & Sweet for the Children

Peanut Butter & Strawberry Jelly

Cheddar Cheese on Wheat (shaped like a teapot!)

Strawberry Cream Cheese with Raspberries

Nuttella and Banana Bites on Baguette

Breads Course

Children and Adults alike were treated to the most delicious, homemade (by Grandmother!)

Blueberry Scones

Served with Devonshire Cream & Strawberry Jam

After the Breads Course the children took a little break from the table while the moms reset.  After a short rehearsal, they wowed us with a rousing rendition of “I’m A Little Teapot” starring the Birthday Girl and staged by yours truly!

Sweets Course

Two Birthday Cakes, of course!!

(Both homemade creations by Grandmother!)

We all sang robustly in honor of our Birthday Girl’s Milestone!

As the adults mingled and enjoyed another cup of tea, the children were treated to the story of “I’m A Little Teapot” read with great gusto by their special friend/big girl helper.  And then there were presents galore for the Birthday Girl!!

As the party came to a close, each little guest was presented with the tea cup she had used at the table, freshly rinsed and filled with candy favors.  Such a special touch to an already very special party!

Thank you, my friends, for including me in this sweet family occasion,

Tea & Testament

January 20, 2010

This week for our January meeting, I was the hostess for my friends in the Group of Rebekah.

For our lesson, I discussed my recent discovery of the world of blogging.  I presented a brief demo and overview of blogging resources.  I shared how writing my Starr Style blog each week is helping me to learn more about my Christian faith as I explore Bible verses to include with my commentaries.

The Rebekahs know a lot of Bible verses!!  Here are some of their favorites:

Matthew 25:40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Philippians 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!  Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there isany virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.  The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you but to love kindness, seek mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

Matthew 6:25-27  Don’t worry.  It will not add one second to your life.

Numbers 6:24-26  The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you;  the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.

1 John 4:4  Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.

Matthew 6:33  Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.

And we all agreed that we loved this one…

Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;
For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

And then it was Tea Time!

The tabletop decor was Victoriana Eclectic, a potpourri of pink & white, silver & gold, crystal & roses.

The menu was a British Afternoon Full Tea (3-1-3)

Our tea tasting choices were Earl Grey, Blueberry Green, Honeydew Melon White, Ginger Peach & India Spice Chai

Savories Course

3 types of tea sandwiches:  Cucumber, White Cheddar with Tomato Pesto and Hummus with Olive Tapenade

Bread Course

Cranberry-Blueberry Scones

with

Mixed Fruit Preserves, Lemon Curd & Cream

Sweets Course

Mini Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting & Black Walnuts, Lady Fingers topped with Strawberry Cream Cheese & a Kiwi Smile, Mini Pastry Cups filled with Milk Chocolate Mousse & topped with a Red Raspberry

Happy palaver all around…

Thank you, LORD, for my dear friends, The Group of Rebekah,

On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 10 – Maryland & Delaware

October 23, 2009
Saturday, October 10
Cape May, New Jersey … Here We Come

We were up early today preparing for the next leg of our trip.  As we packed, we relished the morning view.
Starbucked and ready to roll we drove out of Virginia Beach.
Worth noting on this strikingly scenic drive was our crossing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.  www.cbbt.com.   Without a doubt, this amazing, man-made structure earned its spot within the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World.

Back on dry land, we weaved to and from the shore for miles and miles.

Inland, we glimpsed tell tale signs of fall…

By the shore, we viewed riparian life….

Ready for a pit stop, we came upon this charming little Mom & Pop and came away with a most delectable jar of homemade salsa.

Berlin, Maryland

A mere few minutes from the seashore we came upon this gem of a town.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Berlin was a delightful spot to stretch our legs and grab a bite.

We had passed so many antique cars on the road that day and arriving in Berlin we quickly learned that this was a major destination for these collectors.  The place was hopping with muscle car enthusiasts.

’64 Chevelle SS with 327 w/Dual Quads
This one is for you, Mikey!!
Although we didn’t have time to take tea that day, I could not resist a little snoop around this sweet little tea room.

Like the couple in the left side window, Denis and I will be enjoying our tea times for many years to come….

Another darling vintage theatre to add to my collection.  This one was now a restaurant.

For lunch, we chose the Drummer’s Cafe in the Hotel Atlantic located smack dab in the middle of the town’s center.  The name came from the many traveling salesmen, Drummer’s as they were called, that plied their wares in Berlin at the turn of the 20th century.  Our table on the porch was perfect for townspeople watching.  www.atlantichotel.com
On the menu was a special section titled “Michelle’s Organic and Vegetarian Corner.”  We both chose the Avocado Wrap, but somehow ended up with the Chickpea Hummus Taco.  Not to worry, it was yummy.  It came with avocado chips and a creamy honey Dijon dressing for dipping.
Buckled back in to our own muscle car, we fast tracked it toward the town of Lewes, Delaware where the southern terminus of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is located.  We had a reservation to sail that evening.  Denis kept his eye on the road and his foot on the pedal and I practiced my knit and purl stitches all the way.

We arrived in plenty of time for a stroll out to the pier.
Boarding the ferry for an enjoyable 80 minute ferry ride that connects the historic towns of Lewes, Delaware and Cape May, New Jersey.
The life!!!
We met a few very interesting folks on our ferry crossing.  One couple from Pennsylvania were dead ringers for our Val and Martha.  Although they were not geocachers, they were just as obsessed with treasure hunting of another kind.  Using metal detectors they entered treasure hunting contests all around the USA.  Hearty folks they were too.  It was a rather chilly evening and the water was quite choppy, but they remained outside on deck the entire time.  We sought out some warmth in the upper lounge and there met a lovely old man, a veteran of WWII.  He was hard of hearing but with a mind as sharp as a tack.
Before we knew it, we docked in Cape May.  As we were disembarking, we spotted this gull.
Apropos!

On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 6 – Wilmington, NC

Wilmington, NC

The Front Street Inn
by Denis

In the morning we spent one hour at the Mercedes dealership and replaced our two front tires.  Now we were rolling along on 4 spanking new tires!  It certainly gave us peace of mind as we thought about the journey ahead of us.  While there, I put the finishing touches on the invitations for Amanda’s Afternoon Tea & Baby Shower.

And speaking of Afternoon Tea, when we got back to the historic district we walked over to The Wilmington Tea Room to have tea by the sea!  A fantasy come true for a tea time lover, this adorable tea room was painted a gorgeous shade of Periwinkle with Lime Green accents throughout.  The Tea Ladies were sweet and attentive and the room was filled with happy palaver.

Precious!!
Dainty!
Darling!
Real men pour tea!
The menu included all levels of tea service from Savory to Cream to Royal.  We shared a pot of green tea which was described as follows:

Blue Mango – Sail away on trade winds when tasting the exotic blend of mango, pineapple and mallow petals.
For our savory course we ordered the tasty Vegetable Sandwich.  It was filled with hummos and assorted fresh vegetables on pumpernickel bread and served with fresh fruit in a tea cup!

And then came our Cream course, delicious crumbly scones served with Devonshire cream and raspberry preserves.  Tea Time Heaven!!

On our way out, Denis took this shot of three lovely ladies.  They had visited this tea room together 20 years ago and now they were back again.

One of life’s small pleasures, tea time with good friends (and I’ll include my husband in that).

Later that day, we once again set out to explore the historic district and to have our very first Martini of the road trip.  Some of you know this already, we are on a quest to find our very favorite type of Martini.  Since we were Martini Newbies, that night we stuck to the basics:

Dry…  Vodka…  Olives…

The First Martini

It was a beautiful evening and from where we sat at a balcony table at Riverboat Landing Restaurant on Market Street, we had a wide view of the wharf, riverwalk and harbor.  In the distance we could see yet another film crew working on a scene that looked to be of a festival of sorts.

The facade of the restaurant was also enveloped in light and we were not sure if we had, too, somehow become part of the set!

Our table had been the one on the center balcony.

We both chose one of only two vegetarian entrees on the menu.  It was the Marinated and Grilled Portabella Mushroom.  It was stuffed with goat cheese and arugula and it was accompanied by lemon mashed potatoes, black-eye peas and tender asparagus.

A perfectly prepared portion of portabella!
We lingered awhile on the riverwalk watching the film crew and enjoying our final evening in Wilmington.  Earlier in the day we had noticed a standout coffee table finished in red laquer in the window of a wine shoppe on Front Street.  Always a small world, we found that the shoppe belonged to one of the proprietors of the Front Street Inn, our new friend Chris.  We stopped by on the way back to the inn and sat for a while.  We enjoyed a nice chat with Chris and came away with a lovely bottle of a French Pinot Noir.

On The Road With Denis & Starr/Day 4 – Charleston, SC

October 11, 2009
Sunday, October 4
Happy Birthday, Pauline!
Charleston, SC

We awoke early this morning and took a long walk through The Market and then down East Bay Street. We came upon the famous Rainbow Row of houses and buildings that are painted with a Caribbean color scheme that was popular in the Colonial period. In a little while we arrived at the waterfront and followed the walkway enjoying the huge homes and gardens. We cut back into the residential historic district viewing more stately homes and large, old trees that provided a canopy over many of the streets. It was all so beautiful and made for an invigorating walk.
One day is just not enough to spend in Charleston. We will plan on coming back again when we can spend the 3 days we had planned, or maybe even longer.
My favorite souvenirs are Christmas tree ornaments. Before we checked out, I visited “A Charleston Christmas” on Market Street and here is the one I chose:

When I hang this on our tree in a couple of months, I’ll remember all of the beautiful houses we saw during our one day in Charleston!

Wadmalaw Island, SC
If you love tea like I do, the Charleston Tea Plantation on the secluded and quiet Wadmalaw Island is a must see. This was #1 on my wish list for things to do while in the Charleston area and I am so glad that we took the time to visit this enchanting spot. It is the only tea plantation in North America.
www.charlestonteaplantation.com
First, we took the informative factory tour where we saw up close the process of making tea from the descendants of tea bushes brought to the Low Country from China in the mid-1800′s. Today, these tea plants (camellia sinensis) are being cultivated on this 127 acre plantation. They provide a high-quality black tea known for its mild and sweet flavor, the aroma of which pervaded the viewing gallery.
Next, we boarded the Charleston Tea Plantation Trolley and took a fun and relaxing ride through the tea fields.

There were acres and acres of tea plants.
Our tour guide boasted of having the one and only tea plant harvester of its kind. A big green tea machine!
Then, we visited the tea gift shoppe and purchased their classic black tea, Charleston Breakfast.
Finally, we enjoyed a picnic lunch under the Grand Oaks! What a wonderful time we had at the Charleston Tea Plantation!
And then, once again, we hit the coastal road…..
A few hours later we stopped in Surfside to stretch our legs and have some refreshments
A quick, up to our ankles, dip in the ocean.
And then, look what we found!!!

(Note: Gigi is the name of our soon-to-be-born grand daughter!)

We listened to some fine beach music, felt the sea breezes on our faces and devoured an order of gooey, gloppy spinach & artichoke dip.

Reenergized, we’re off again. Destination – Wilmington, North Carolina by nightfall….
